Aladdin (Horse)

31 years old

Handsome Aladdin was rescued from a kill auction and came to us with his bonded companion, Jasmine.  Poor Aladdin bears the physical scars from years of abuse, including being blind in one eye.  Nevertheless, he is a gentle, loving horse who is completely devoted to caring for and protecting his blind companion horse.  Aladdin is an Arabian and, even though he's older now,  he's still got a prancing gait that is poetry in motion.  He is as sweet as he is handsome.

Andy (Donkey)

4 years old

Andy was all alone on his way to a kill auction when we rescued him at the same time that we rescued Anna and Rudy. We had only planned to rescue Anna and Rudy but we couldn’t possibly leave this poor little orphan behind. Fortunately, Anna and Rudy immediately accepted Andy as part of their little family even though, as our only solid brown donkey, he looks nothing like them. Andy is a sweet, easy going, little guy.

Anna (Donkey)

5 years old

Anna was rescued along with Rudy and Andy while in route to a Louisiana kill auction. When she first arrived, she was terrified of people and ran to the furthest corner of the pasture when she saw us coming. She was protective of her son, Rudy, her adopted son, Andy, but didn’t trust people at all. With some time and patience, she has learned to love us and now comes running when we are in the barn. She is a great mom to Andy and Rudy and her surprise baby (Sam) born in July, 2018.

Atlas (Horse)

12 years old

Atlas was rescued as a yearling  when his previous sanctuary learned that he was destined to be sold to an unscrupulous trainer who used painful, unethical techniques to create the Tennessee Walker gait.  He came to us with his best friend, Razor, when his previous sanctuary  closed.  Unfortunately,  Atlas has developed EMD so we have to carefully manage his diet and hoof care to avoid painful founder.  He  spends most of his time on the dry lot where he is at least twice the size of every other animal out there but always sweet and gentle with them.  He's a peacemaker among our animals and, although, he's the largest animal at the sanctuary, he is also one of the most gentle.  To know him is to love him.

Bonnie (Goat)

8 years old

Bonnie came to us with Clyde after they somehow ended up at a German Shepherd rescue in Florida. When she first got here, she wasn’t used to being around people and was sweet but a little shy. She quickly warmed up and has become one of our friendliest goats. She loves to eat and for a short fat little goat, she can sneak through a tiny little opening in a barn door to try and get to the treats. She’s stealthy! Her first and most important loyalty has been to her partner, Clyde.

Cedar (Cow)

2 years old

Cedar was only about 6 weeks old when he came to us.  He is Viney's son,  Maple's sister and uncle to little Oakley (who is only about a month younger than Cedar!)  Cedar is a very friendly calf -  surprisingly relaxed around people for a cow his age.   Like Oakley, Cedar will grow up here surrounded by love and care  from both his cow and his human family.

Charlie (Goat)

8 months old

Charlie was born on a farm in Florida and managed to get one of his back legs so tightly entangled in rope or netting that it cut off the circulation until his leg fell off.  Rather than treat his painful, infected leg, the farmer sent him to auction where a good samaritan bought him and took him to a rescue there where he was stabilized,  his remaining infected stump was amputated and we arranged transport here.  He was terrified and miserable until he met the llamas and became their official mascot.  Now he's a happy, healthy energetic little goat who has found his happy ending.

Clyde (Goat)

8 years old

Clyde came to us with Bonnie after ending up at a German Shepherd rescue in Florida. He was totally unsocialized when he got here and wanted nothing to do with us or any of the other animals. His only friend was his precious Bonnie and she’s still the apple of his eye. However, once Clyde settled in, he became one of our most social animals. You will frequently see him pictured with the other animals (of all species) around the farm.

Dae (Goat)

8 years old

Dae was rescued and bottle fed along with her brother, Drogo. She had a happy life as more of a family pet than a pasture goat. When her rescuer graduated from school and moved across country to start her career she couldn’t take Dae with her so she came to live here on the farm with her brother, Drogo. Dae is friendly and quickly bonded with the other goats – especially Tulip who is a lot older but looks enough like Dae to be her mother (or grandmother.) However, Dae always turns to Drogo when it is time to curl up for the night.

Daisy (Pig)

4 years old

Daisy is quite the character.  She's the biggest and oldest of our pigs.  Daisy was picked up by animal control as a stray so we know nothing about her background.  She loves people and other pigs but we believe that she thinks she is a horse.  She has a wonderful friendship with Atlas and likes to sleep in the shelter with the horses at night where she built herself a little nest in one of the stalls.  She might not be a classic beauty but she is undeniably adorable.

Daisy, the cow (Cow)

6 years old

Sweet Daisy came to us from Carolina Waterfowl Rescue where she lived for several years after being rescued with her friend, Maybelle, from horrible, abusive conditions.  Fortunately, she has known plenty of love and care in recent years and it shows.  She is healthy, happy and VERY friendly.    She's the biggest cow on the farm and she also has one of the biggest hearts.

Dali (Llama)

18 years old

Dali began her life as a pedigreed, registered llama who competed in shows and marched in parades.   At some point Dali and a llama friend  went to live with someone and at some point after that Dali's llama friend died and her new owner became increasingly ill and unable to care for her.  Sweet Dali went from having an active social life to living alone and neglected in a pasture - a sad and lonely existence for a social herd animal like a llama.  Fortunately, she was rescued by Southeast Llama Rescue and came to us and now she shares a pasture with our herd of geriatric llamas,  pigs, goats, turkeys and people and she LOVES it.  She is such a happy, social outgoing lady llama  and she's just a joy to be around.

Duck posse #1 (Duck)

4 years old

The duck posse – these four ducks all came to us together and have remained an inseparable posse of four. After a little jockeying for position, they accepted Waddles into the group and now the five of them spend most of their day paddling around the pond and occasionally challenging the visiting Canada geese to a rumble.

Ducks and Geese (Duck)

3 months old

We have over 100 ducks and geese of almost every color and description living in two separate ponds.  Most of them are tame and friendly.  Some of them have injuries or conditions that limit their mobility but, mostly, they are simply domesticated birds who would not survive in the wild and who have been rescued from bad situations.  Please consider sponsoring one (or more) of the duck dudes!

Elliot (Cow)

4 years old

Elliott is Savi’s son and Taran’s half brother. He had a tough start in life and was actually blind at birth. Fortunately, that resolved and now he’s a healthy, happy guy. Elliott is one of our most friendly cows. He absolutely loves people and happily comes running when he sees us heading out to the barn.

Elvis (Cow)

Elvis was the first cow of our cows to get here. He came with his sweet mother, Sissy, when he was less than 2 weeks old. He was a friendly, peopleloving calf from the very start. He continues to be a laid back happy guy. He has happily welcomed all of the new animals as they have arrived and especially bonded with Indira as a mother figure who arrived only a few months before sweet Sissy crossed the rainbow bridge.

Ethel came to us with her sister, Lucy. She was born to a feral cat and lived under a front porch until she came to us. Ethel is slightly more adventurous than her sister Lucy and I frequently find her at the top of a tree (although she always manages to get down.) Ethel loves people, all of the other animals in the pasture and she just adores her sister Lucy.

Flash (Horse)

11 years old

Flash is a little hackney pony who has spent his entire life in rescues and sanctuaries.  We're so sad that he's never really had a family of his own to love but we do everything we can to let him know he is safe and loved here.  Flash has a beautiful, proud little prance and it’s great fun to watch him frolic around the pasture. Flash was very skittish when he first got here. It was terribly difficult to even get him on the trailer to bring him here.  He still thinks it's great fun to try and avoid us when we need to catch him for the vet or farrier.  He has a way of looking you right in the eye when you talk to him.  He's smart, funny and one of a kind.

Gladys (Donkey)

19 years old

Gladys was rescued along with June from the kill pen at Louisiana kill auction. She is very easy-going and friendly. The only time that we see Gladys really distressed is when June has to go to the vet for work on her hooves. Then poor Gladys will stand in the middle of the pasture and bray like the world’s loneliest donkey until June returns. It is heartbreaking but her loyalty is beautiful. Gladys gets along with everyone but her heart belongs to June.

Hamlet (Pig)

1 years old

Hamlet was rescued by a kind woman in NC when his mother rejected him at birth.  She bottle fed him, got him neutered and took excellent care of him but as he grew, he needed more than she could provide so he came to live with us here at FSFS at about 7 months old.  He is friendly, funny and a little mischievious.

Honey Bun is just as sweet as her name implies. She’s a little shy and quiet but happily spends her days with Johanna and Vivian and whoever else happens to be around. She is one of our least pushy goats and will happily wait her turn if we’re handing out treats – this kind of patience is a rare trait in goats so she definitely lives up to her name.

Indira is the undisputed leader of our cow family/herd. She has a lot of personality and is very outgoing. At the same time, she is protective of her little cow family and makes sure to keep a close eye on anyone that she doesn’t know well. She arrived right before Elvis lost his mom and immediately adopted little Elvis as her own. We call her our “head cow.”
She also "smiles" for pictures sometimes! Can you see it?

Jack (Pig)

Jack is blind in one eye and his face and right ear will always bear the scars from a dog mauling prior to his rescue by Polk County Animal Control where he landed after being found wandering and injured.  He is the sweetest, most gentle pig in the world who refuses to let his tough pre-rescue life color his rosy color of the world.  He has a heart of gold.  We have no idea of age so we celebrate his birthday on the day he came to us!

Jasmine (Horse)

Jasmine was rescued from a kill auction with her bonded companion,  Aladdin. Sweet Jasmine came to us in the late stages of recurrent uveitis. She was already blind in her left eye and only able to sense light and shadows with her right eye which was still significantly inflamed and painful.  We treated her with months of eye drops and procedures at Auburn Vet School until she finally is pain free.  Her already compromised vision will continue to deteriorate until she is completely blind but she is an amazingly trusting, calm and gentle horse so we are confident that she will do well with our help and the continued love and protection that Aladdin gives her.  She's a young and otherwise healthy horse and we intend to give her her best life.

Jed was one of our very first residents when came to the farm with Maggie.  Jed is a stallion in a miniature body! He thinks he is large and in charge of the barnyard and he likes to strut around so that everyone can see how handsome he is. Jed was the first to bond with Melvin (the mini-donkey) when Melvin first joined us and the two of them are still great friends. June was rescued from a kill pen at an auction in December 2017 before she could be sent to slaughter. Lady (Horse)

25 years old

Lady is among the sweetest horses we have ever met.  She was seized by animal control in Florida so skinny that all of her ribs showed and her hooves had been neglected for so long that they were curved upward.  She was temporarily placed in a loving foster home until an unexpected judge's order sent her to immediate auction where she would almost certainly be sent to slaughter.  Her foster mom could not allow this to happen so she scraped up some cash, raced to the auction and purchased her with the plan to send her here to live out the rest of her years.  Despite everything Lady has been through, she loves everyone - every animal and human that she meets.  We adore this sweet girl and intend to spend the rest of her life making her forget about all of the awful things she suffered before coming to us.

Laverne (Pig)

1 years old

Laverne was our first  pig ever.  Poor Laverne was penned in a tiny little pen with no fresh water or food when animal control removed her.  Her saving grace is that she was penned up with her best friend, a tiny goat that we named Shirley.  Laverne had been fed lots of empty calories and had no room to exercise so she has a lot of weight to lose in order to be healthy and more mobile but she's on her way with Shirley right by her side.  Laverne is already getting around a little better and she absolutely loves people.  She comes running whenever she hears us coming and loves attention.  She also loves finally having a shelter with a soft bed of hay, soft green grass to run around on and healthy meals to eat on a regular basis.  And she really loves that she and Shirley will get to be together for the rest of their lives.

Lily (Cow)

4 years old

Lily is the only cow actually born here! When Indira arrived she was already pregnant with Lily. I walked out to the pasture one beautiful April morning and there she was just hanging out with Indira and Elvis on her wobbly legs. Lily is quiet, a little shy but very sweet and happily takes treats from our hands.

Little Bit (Cow)

4 years old

Little Bit almost died at birth and for a while , it was touch and go for him. We think that’s at least part of the reason that he’s still so tiny. Even though he’s a little guy, he’s very healthy now. He’s super friendly and follows us around the pasture like a little puppy dog.

Lucky (Goat)

19 years old

Lucky is one of our two most senior goats. He and his bonded companion, Tulip are somewhere around 17 years old. He is about as wide as he is tall and he really, really loves his treats. He is an easygoing goat who gets along with everyone but mostly has eyes for his beloved Tulip. He has the most beautiful blue eyes that look right into yours when you talk to him.

Lucky Duck (Duck)

3 years old

Lucky Duck aka LD joined us on 2/23/19.  He went to his foster home as a sweet little duckling but when he hit puberty and started attacking their chickens, he needed to find a new home.  It's hard to imagine LD attacking chickens because he is a peacekeeper among the ducks here.  Before LD arrived, Willy was never, ever seen with  Waddles and his posse but LD got here and now all of the ducks seem to have bonded.  We don't know what he said to them but we're thinking that we may need to change his name to Ghandi.  He's clearly a charmer.

Lucy (Cat)

4 years old

Lucy came to us with her sister, Ethel. She was born to a feral cat and spent the first three months of her life living under someone’s front porch. Lucy is super friendly, loves attention and will let you pet her until your arm gets tired. Lucy loves hanging out with the other animals and doesn’t seem remotely concerned about the fact that they all outweigh her by 100s of pounds. She spends her days supervising everyone - usually from the top of the barn door and she spends her nights sleeping in her heated cat bed.

Maggie (Horse)

7 years old

Maggie came here with Jed and she’s the only one who can put him in his place. Jed never messes with Maggie when she’s trying to eat. Maggie has the most beautiful blue eyes and she even has black eyeliner that makes them really pop. She’s a looker! Although Maggie came with Jed, when she met Oreo, she found a true BFF and the two of them are frequently seen grooming each other. Now Jed, Maggie, Oreo and Melvin are always together and we call them the fearsome foursome.

Maple (Cow)

6 years old

How could anyone not love a cow like Maple with those wonderful, wonky, lopsided horns?  Maple is Viney's daughter, Cedar's sister and Oakley's mama.  Oakley is her only child and it is a testament to Maple's gentle nature that she so easily trusts us around him.  She's a great mom and a wonderful addition to our sanctuary family.

Marimba (Llama)

18 years old

Marimba is our most joyful llama!  She's like a big kid - she's thrilled to see people coming her way and always first in line for treats.  Her hair is usually a mess and her face is usually smeared with dust, oats or minerals but that only adds to her considerable charm.

Maybelle (Cow)

Maybelle came to us from Carolina Waterfowl Rescue with her best friend, Daisy, after being rescued from horrendous conditions years ago.  She has known lots of love and care most recently and she is a loving, friendly girl.  She was very excited to meet her look alike, Wanda, when she got here and the two of them have bonded like long lost sisters.   We're delighted to have sweet Maybelle as a member of our FSFS family.

Melvin (Donkey)

9 years old

Melvin was neglected by his original owners and left out in a field to fend for himself where his hooves became so overgrown he could barely walk. A good Samaritan took him in, had a farrier begin work on his hooves and then the farrier brought him to us. He’s a little mini-donkey but he thinks he’s a miniature horse. Melvin is part of the group we call the fearsome foursome with Maggie, Jed and Oreo and pretty much ignores all of the other donkeys. He is a sweet, easygoing and a farm favorite for our visitors.

Mystique (Llama)

23 years old

Mystique is our most senior llama.  I try to get extra oats in her whenever I can because she tends to be a little skinny.  She occasionally takes treats but much prefers oats and minerals.  Mystique is frequently found lounging under a tree, watching the other llamas meander around the pasture and enjoying the shade.  She's a bit of a shy lady but very sweet and I consider her the grand dame of our little llama herd.

Precious Oakley  is the youngest of our cows.  He is the son of Maple and the grandson of Viney.  He is tiny and sweet with mostly white hair, a red head and a very pink little belly.  Oakley came to us when he was only 9 days old so he will get to grow up here with his family and know only love and security.

Oreo (Horse)

24 years old

Oreo came to the farm with her best friend, Roy, a very senior donkey, who died a year later. Oreo was just skin and bones when she was originally rescued by a humane society in northern Indiana. They got her healthier and then she came to live out her life here. We know that she went through a lot before she got here and she has an old injury to one of her eyes which limits her sight to some degree. She is a little shy, especially with new people, but she is very responsive to gentle words and will usually follow me without a lead – just some quiet coaxing and soft touches. From the minute that Oreo saw Maggie and Jed across the fence line, she knew that she had found her soul mates so she’s now part of the fearsome foursome with Jed, Maggie, and Melvin.

Pink (Llama)

22 years old

Sweet Pink spent most of her life as a breeder and when her breeding days were over she was tossed away.  Unfortunately, before she  was thrown away, she developed a tooth so infected that it ate into her jaw bone and we're still working with the vets at UGA to take care of that.  Poor Pink  has to have her jaw cleaned and periodically get a course of antibiotic injections.  However, she never loses her sweet, cooperative nature.  She's easy to love.

Razor (Horse)

12 years old

Razor was rescued by Lester and Diane from a terrible situation where he was being neglected by people and attacked by other horses as the smallest, weakest horse in the pasture.  He was supposed to be a temporary foster but he and Atlas bonded so tightly that they couldn't be separated so Razor came to us with Atlas when Lester and Diane retired.  Razor is as sweet as they come but has a touch of mischief in him too.  He loves to tease the other animals and play with the donkeys but he's always gentle and mindful of his size.  He adores Atlas and the two of them are obviously BFFs.  Sweet Razor still bears a few physical scars from his difficult earlier life but now he knows nothing but love and kindness.

Renny (Horse)

25 years old

Renny is an appaloosa who had a history of cancer and the inability to keep weight on his bones. Everyone thought he had metastatic cancer and a limited life span and we considered him a hospice horse when he came to live with us in the summer of 2018. After lots of time in our lush green pasture , plenty of oats and food supplements, Renny has actually become “borderline chubby” according to our vet who can find no signs of cancer! He is obviously a beautiful horse but he’s just as sweet inside – with a gentle, calm nature that makes him a joy to be around.

Rosie (Dog)

9 years old

We were driving down the road one very, very hot July afternoon when we saw Rosie - dragging herself down the scorching pavement with no use of her back legs.  We scooped her up, took her straight to the vet and started her on steroids and physical therapy.  She also had several teeth that were so rotten they were literally crumbling in her mouth so we had those removed.  She was not microchipped and no owner was ever found so she stayed with us and we continued her therapy.  She currently gets acupuncture 4-5 times a year but is otherwise healthy.  She is 8 lbs of sheer determination.  Her legs don't work like they should but they work well enough for her to run, run, run all over the farm.  She is in constant motion!  Although, she will always have deficits and must wear diapers when she is inside, she is a happy pup with boundless energy.

Rudy (Donkey)

4 years old

Rudy was rescued with his mother, Anna, on his way to a kill auction at less than a year old. He has gone from skittish colt to friendly gelding since he got here. He’s our only solid white donkey and he’s a sweetheart. His best friend is Andy – his adopted brother. He’s also a great big brother to Sam. Rudy loves to play and chase but he never gets too rough. He also loves people and comes running to greet us every morning.

Sam was born here! We had no idea that Anna was pregnant when we rescued her. Because we started interacting with Sam when he was less than an hour old, he quickly bonded and is totally comfortable with us. We like to joke that he thinks he’s just a big-eared dog. He just loves people! He also likes to wrestle with his big brother Rudy but he still spends most of his day side-by-side with his mama, Anna.

Samantha (Pig)

2 years old

Samantha is a young pig but we're not sure of her exact age.  When her owners moved out of their home and left her behind, this smart girl sought help from neighbors.  Just like a friendly stray dog showed up at their doors begging for food.  She was sweet, very talkative and nobody could say no.  Unfortunately, no one had the ability to keep her and they were worried that she could get hit by a car, attacked by dogs or suffer some other dire fate if they left her roaming free so they caught her in a large dog crate and brought her to FSFS.  We got her spayed and vaccinated and now she's safe and loved in her forever home.

Scully is a jersey steer and the biggest cow on the farm  - probably the biggest animal on the farm.  But don't let his size and giant horns fool you, he's a sweetheart.  Kind of the benevolent ruler of the cow pasture where one stern look from him makes everyone behave.  And he's a sucker for sweet Stella - his life companion.

Squirrel (Horse)

22 years old

After being rescued from an abusive trainer, Squirrel spent many happy years with a loving owner.   They both got older and his owner made the decision that it would be best for her to move closer to her children in the Northeast but best for Squirrel, who was aging and had developed Cushings, to stay at his boarding facility in Texas where he was used to the warmer weather.  His owner worked extra jobs to pay for his boarding and care until it was no longer possible.  It's not easy to find a home for an older horse but no stone was left unturned and Squirrel landed here in April, 2021.  He's the strong, silent, calm type  - a true gentle giant.  We're thrilled to be his forever retirement home.

Totes (Goat)

7 years old

Totes was found wandering alone in a neighborhood in northern Indiana. When a search failed to turn up anyone who was missing a goat, he was taken in by a humane society employee until she could no longer care for him. Totes made his way to our sanctuary in May, 2017. He is the tallest goat at the farm, he loves to get into mischief and we’re pretty sure he thinks he’s a dog.

Tulip is one of our two most senior goats. In fact, she and her bonded companion, Lucky, have already lived about 5 years past the life expectancy for pygmy goats! Tulip is just about as wide as she is tall but don’t let that fool you – she is an escape artist and can slip out of a gate the minute you open it! She is sweet, friendly and easy-going.

Viney (Cow)

9 years old

Sweet Viney is a very special cow.  She is mom to Maple and Cedar and grandmother to Oakley.  Viney is an unusually affectionate cow who loves to interact with people.  She will carefully lean her head against your leg, with her horns straddling your thigh and that's her signal for you to give her some attention.  She is a calm and loving presence with her little cow family and a special treat to have at our sanctuary.

Vivian (Goat)

9 years old

Vivian is the mother to Weston and is an easy-going goat who is friend to everyone on the farm. She spends most of her time with Johanna and Honey Bun but gets along beautifully with everyone on the farm. When Johanna’s mom died, Vivian took over as a surrogate mom to her.  She is a quiet, gentle goat and very easy to love.

Waddles (Duck)

5 years old

Waddles came to us from Goose Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation in Tallahassee. Waddles has a wing deformity called angel wing which means that he cannot fly. It doesn’t seem to bother him a bit and he spends his days swimming in the pond and waddling around the pasture with his duck posse.

Weston (Goat)

6 years old

Weston is the son of Swashi and Vivian. He has big ears that look like floppy wings when he runs around. Weston is one of our more mischevious goats. He is one of the first to try and steal a treat from your pocket or sneak into the barn when you’re not looking but he has a big heart and loves people. He’s just a big goofy boy.

Willy (Pig)

1 years old

To know Willy is to love Willy.  He is the youngest, happiest pig at FSFS and he is ALWAYS happy.  Willy was picked up as a stray by animal control with lots of skin problems and entropion (an uncomfortable eyelid condition.)  He has injections, medicated baths, and minor surgery on his eyelids but nothing has ever kept him down.  He loves everyone and everything is always thrilled to have company.
